About Us

The Cape Tourist Guides Association (CTGA) has a rich history dating back to the mid-1970s, when a dedicated group of individuals engaged in guided tours recognized the need for a collective voice. Since its inception, CTGA has remained a steadfast organization, exclusively led by accredited tourist guides who are deeply invested in advancing the profession.

Aligned with the mandates of the National Department of Tourism, as stipulated in the Tourism Act 3 of 2014, CTGA operates under the auspices of the Western Cape Department of Economic Affairs and Tourism. This regulatory framework ensures adherence to industry standards and best practices, reinforcing the association’s commitment to excellence.

As a membership-based organization, CTGA thrives on the active participation and collaboration of its members. An Executive Committee, comprised of dedicated individuals serving in diverse portfolios, oversees the association’s operations. These committee members volunteer their time, offering valuable support and guidance to fellow members on matters ranging from CTGA policies to day-to-day challenges.

Furthermore, the Executive Committee plays a pivotal role in representing the interests of the association and the broader guiding community across various governmental and quasi-governmental platforms. Through their advocacy efforts and strategic engagements, they champion the professionalization and recognition of tourist guides as indispensable contributors to Cape Town’s tourism landscape.

The democratic process is upheld within CTGA, with Executive Committee members elected annually during the Annual General Meeting (AGM). This ensures transparency, accountability, and continuity in leadership, empowering members to actively shape the direction and priorities of the association.

In essence, CTGA stands as a beacon of professionalism and unity within the tourist guiding fraternity, driven by a shared commitment to excellence, advocacy, and community empowerment.
